Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a very common condition that can cause women to have irregular periods, difficulty in getting pregnant, develop acne and increased facial hair. Even though it is called “polycystic”, there are no cysts on the ovary.

Every month, the ovaries are supposed to release an egg. This is called “ovulation,” but in women with PCOS, the ovary makes many small follicles without actually releasing an egg, which then causes hormone levels to get out of balance.

Issues resulting from this relate to

  • Irregular periods, once in 2-6 months
  • Acne, facial hair and weight gain
  • Difficulty with getting pregnant
  • Diabetes and/or high cholesterol

DIAGNOSIS
Is based on symptoms,  blood tests including hormone levels and an ultrasound scan of the uterus and ovaries.

TREATMENT
Depends on circumstances, symptoms and pregnancy plans.

  • Diet and exercise to lose weight often works well to improve symptoms.
  • Birth control pills can help to improve many of the symptoms
  • Metformin- helps to keep blood sugars normal and helps in about half the women
  • Tablets to bring on ovulation, if planning a pregnancy.
